The CAN DO Community Foundation donated to Tri-Area Recreation for the reclamation of a site along the Arthur Gardner Parkway that is now known as Louis Schiavo City View Park.
The Hazleton area is beset with scars from former strip mining of anthracite coal that aided in the country’s industrial revolution. As part of its focus on conservation, preservation and reclamation, the foundation works to turn such areas into aesthetic and useful parcels.
The grant to the Tri-Area Recreation Authority assisted with the group's efforts in reclaiming mine-scarred lands for beneficial recreation use by residents of Greater Hazleton. The contribution helped develop Louis Schiavo City View Park, located in the Heights section of Hazleton. Conveniently located at an entrance to the city, the park is easily accessed from all parts of the community.
Louis Schiavo City View Park includes a USA BMX-sanctioned track [view site] that welcomes experienced or new BMX or ABA riders. Races and practices are held weekly during the season. The 16-acre park also features several pavilions that the City of Hazleton and local community groups use to host events, a staging area, landscaping, and a walking trail. The City of Hazleton hosts many annual events at the park, including its Fourth of July fireworks display.
Bailey's Bark Park, a fenced dog park that includes trails, benches, doggie water foundation, special agility equipment and a separate area for small dogs, is another part of the park.
Help us improve the quality of life for the Greater Hazleton community.
