The CAN DO Community Foundation announced the selection of seven area students as recipients of the Edgar L. Dessen Community Service Award.
The Dessen award is a scholarship that allows community-minded juniors from high schools located in the CAN DO service area the opportunity to enroll in the Junior Leadership of Greater Hazleton program. The Edgar L. Dessen Community Service Award is available to incoming juniors from Hazleton Area High School, Immanuel Christian School, Marian Catholic High School, MMI Preparatory School and Weatherly Area High School.
The CAN DO Community Foundation recently presented the fifth annual Joseph Yenchko Awards – scholarships named for the first CAN DO employee – to six area students to attend Ferrwood Music Camp.
Foundation President Gary F. Lamont announced that the awards were presented to:
Melissa Clatch of Drums, a student at Drums Elementary/Middle School; Sarah Habel of Hazleton, a student at Heights-Terrace Elementary/Middle School; Hannah Kunetz of Hazle Township, a student at McAdoo Kelayres; Megan Novak of Freeland, a student at Freeland Elementary/Middle School; Dustin Snyder of White Haven, a student at Freeland Elementary/Middle School; and Angelina Umbriac of Hazleton, a student at Heights-Terrace Elementary/Middle School.
The CAN DO Community Foundation Award at Penn State Hazleton is awarded annually at the annual Highacres Society Dinner. This scholarship honors and recognizes outstanding academic achievement by an undergraduate student enrolled in the baccalaureate degree in business at the Hazleton campus of Penn State University.
The scholarship is specifically designated for a student from Greater Hazleton. Full- and part-time students who have attained high academic achievement at the end of their second semester are considered for the award. Continuing education students receive special consideration.
The CAN DO Community Foundation Award is given for one academic year, and a recipient is able to be considered for the scholarship again through continued academic achievement. The Penn State Hazleton Scholarship Commitee selects the recipients of the scholarship.
