Seven local incoming seniors have been awarded their certification for successfully completing the Junior Leadership of Greater Hazleton program as Edgar L. Dessen Community Service Award recipients. The students graduated from the Junior Leadership 2014-15 program and are now recognized as “Dessen scholars.”
The CAN DO Community Foundation announced the selection of seven area students as recipients of the Edgar L. Dessen Community Service Award.
The Dessen award is a scholarship that allows community-minded juniors from high schools located in the CAN DO service area the opportunity to enroll in the Junior Leadership of Greater Hazleton program. The Edgar L. Dessen Community Service Award is available to incoming juniors from Hazleton Area High School, Immanuel Christian School, Marian Catholic High School, MMI Preparatory School and Weatherly Area High School.
The CAN DO Community Foundation recently presented the fifth annual Joseph Yenchko Awards – scholarships named for the first CAN DO employee – to six area students to attend Ferrwood Music Camp.
Foundation President Gary F. Lamont announced that the awards were presented to:
Melissa Clatch of Drums, a student at Drums Elementary/Middle School; Sarah Habel of Hazleton, a student at Heights-Terrace Elementary/Middle School; Hannah Kunetz of Hazle Township, a student at McAdoo Kelayres; Megan Novak of Freeland, a student at Freeland Elementary/Middle School; Dustin Snyder of White Haven, a student at Freeland Elementary/Middle School; and Angelina Umbriac of Hazleton, a student at Heights-Terrace Elementary/Middle School.
