Walk for Ferrwood Music Camp

Why not get out and walk to support Ferrwood Music Camp? Highmark is bringing its “Walk for a Healthy Community” to Northeastern Pennsylvania and Ferrwood Music Camp is taking this opportunity to raise funds that 100% of money benefits local children. The “Walks” are held in various locations, and all expenses associated with the walk are paid for by Highmark.

Ferrwood is sponsoring teams to raise money. The camp has just celebrated its 50 year anniversary and continues to create fond childhood memories.

Please consider participating by donating or by joining us as a walker. Your participation will make this a successful fundraiser. As the sole organization participating from the greater Hazleton community, we have the opportunity to show our community pride as we join ten other non-profits from Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Downtown building to become Irish style pub and restaurant

Downtown Hazleton’s revitalization is moving ahead full steam on the north side of Broad Street between Wyoming and Laurel streets, where construction crews are working on the future home of Broad and Barrel, an Irish style pub and restaurant that is expected to open in mid 2018.

CAN DO, Inc. purchased the building at 21-23 West Broad Street a year ago as part of its continuing commitment to the downtown with plans to renovate it into a beautiful addition to the streetscape and to attract a tenant like the one that will be leasing the building to operate the eatery.

“CAN DO is continuing its commitment to the City of Hazleton and Greater Hazleton by investing in our downtown,” said Kevin O’Donnell, CAN DO’s president. “The CAN DO Community Foundation has taken an active role in our downtown as well and is investing in its revitalization. When this restaurant opens next year and the Arts Center is completed, it will be a beautiful destination and will attract more people to our center city. CAN DO has been a part of the downtown since the 1990s when we built our headquarters at the intersection of Broad and Church streets."

CAN DO Community Foundation Receives Little League Practice Fields Project Report

The CAN DO Community Foundation, at a recent meeting, received a final closeout report from Nancy Stasko on the initial phase of the reclamation of the Little League practice fields at the Correale Stadium complex located at 11th and Monges streets.

The practice fields continually experienced rainwater runoff during severe storms. The runoff would erode and wash away the top soil and turf, leaving the fields unsuitable for use.

CAN DO Community Foundation was asked to become involved and, over the years, teamed up with Hazleton Little League, the City of Hazleton, Hazle Township and CAN DO to improve the fields needed to meet the increased demand for kids having a desire to learn to play baseball. Working in collaboration with these partners, phase one has been completed. The Foundation’s model is to “adopt” a project and work with partners to secure funding and donated services to accomplish a project.
